5 Ways to Impress Your New Boss When Youre Starting a Job - The Muse

5 Ways to Impress Your New Boss When Youre Starting a Job - The Muse5 Ways to Impress Your New Boss When Youre Starting a JobEveryone knows first impressions are important, but its less obvious that the first impression for a new job can take 60, 90, or even 180 days to make. Why? In large companies, it can take that long just to meet all of the important business partners and customers with whom you will be working. Every initial exchange, meeting, or discussion contributes to the first impression people have of you. In smaller companies, where meeting everyone takes less time, new hires tend to feel more watched and evaluated. The term under the microscope becomes their mantra. During the first 90 days of your new position, youre establishing credibility so that you can actually do your job. Heres how smart people use that time1. They View Starting a New Job as an Exercise in Personal BrandingMake no mistake, you will be judged based on how you show up at work. Your work is your br and- as is your general demeanor, reliability in showing up for meetings or completing projects on time, and the way you dress. Even more important, but more subtle, is how appropriately you open up to your new co-workers. Do you undershare, omitting valuable feedback because youre uncomfortable saying anything that isnt complimentary? Do you overshare as a way to try and build connections? All of these things combine to make up how youre perceived by your new colleagues. Smart people work to be known as a person who is interesting and easy to talk to, but who can also buckle down and get to work. 2. They Chill OutNews flash You got the job Studies have proven that anxiety is contagious. Starting a new job is exciting for you, but its just another day at the office for everyone else. Be calm and strive to match the energy and pace of the office environment, even if its different than yours. Once you are known, you can go at your own pace, but until then, dont be the hyper-anxious p erson everyone intuitively wants to avoid. Smart people take a deep breath when theyre feeling overwhelmed and make a composed, can-do impression at their new job. 3. They Use the 70/30 RuleAre you familiar with the 70/30 rule? It suggests that 70% of the time you ask questions and inquire about how things work. Then, the other 30% of the time, share background on yourself so people get to know you and how you think. If you monopolize the conversation by talking about yourself too much, people may mistake it for arrogance, or alternatively for trying too hard. Smart people learn to ask incisive (but not invasive) questions about the organization. That way your interviews and discussions with people will have value for them as well as for you. 4. They Do Their HomeworkBy the time they show up on day one, people who want to hit the ground running have already done the preliminary research to understand the bigger context of what their new organization does, why, and how prior events informed the current practices. In between being hired and starting a new job, they find someone at the organization- often a hiring manager or a peer who reports to the saatkorn person- to exchange a few emails with to get up to speed. By doing their homework ahead of time, smart people are able to engage their co-workers in conversations that are deeper and more valuable than just catching up. 5. They Pay Attention to Company CultureWhat are the assumptions and beliefs that drive peoples behaviors and actions? Collectively, these define the culture of the organization. You can neither buck nor support it until you get it. For those who are immersed in it, culture becomes innate, and because of this, some of the people who epitomize it (the fish in the proverbial water) cant tell you about it. Smart people learn about the environment not by what people say they are going to do, or what they say they value, but by watching what people actually do. How are customers treated? How does the company engage the hearts and minds of the employees? Are policies implemented and enforced consistently, and if not- why not? Starting a new job is a high-stakes transition. You will never be more ignorant about how to fit in than when you start but on the other hand, you will be making lasting first impressions from the very beginning. Do what smart people do and find the balance. Be yourself, but be on. Relax, but listen and ask great questions. Finally, understand the big picture and tap into the culture. Bring Your Passion Back to Work

Bring Your Passion Back to WorkBring Your Passion Back to WorkRemember the days when you loved going to work? You were challenged, excited, and ready for your next adventure. Then again, perhaps you were never passionate about your work. You can discover the passion thats available in your work or rediscover the passion you once had for your work.In an email interview with Brett Bacon, the author of Millionaire Selling Secrets, he talks about how to discover thepassion for your job that you never knew existedIt is so easy to forgetwhyyou do the work and focus only onhowyou do it. You need to focus on thewhybehind your work to discover passion for it. The first step is to identify all of the benefits that you provide to your customers. Ask yourself the following questions to identify the benefits? How will my product or service improve the lives of my customers? How do I add value for my customers? What is unique about what I offer that I can be truly proud of?To do this, write down the be nefits you believe you provide for your customers. Then select the benefits that excite you the most. Next, identify the features of your product or service that you think your customers may want. What will excite them? What is unique about you or what you offer? Finally, match up the features you identified with the customer benefits.Take this information and develop a schlussverkauf mantra that is, think of one sentence that captures the essence of the key benefit that you provide to your customers. Your sales mantra is personal to you. It is the essence of why you are so passionate about your work.Bacon explains that this is important because, You need to remind yourself throughout the day why you do the work that you do. If you dont remind yourself, you can get sidetracked by daily difficulties and setbacks and lose your focus, which will drain away your passion.Demonstrate Your Work Passion to Your CustomersMost importantly, once youve generated enthusiasm in yourself, you are ready to tell your customers about your product or your service- with passion and excitement. You should feel very proud of what you can do for your customers. Tell everyone you know about your passion for serving your customers. This will help you build and maintain your own passion. The second major stepis to display your passion to your client or customer. Its not enough that you feel the passion inside. You have to let the customers know you are passionate about your product and your service to them.Bacon suggests these ideas for displaying passion to your customer or clientIt starts with your body posture show energy and excitement in your body posture and movement. Give all of your customers a warm greeting.Your voice is a key indicator of passion put some passion into your voice by speaking with energy and commitment. Dont let the volume of your voice trail off at the end of your sentences- keep the volume up so that you can be heard- your customers will appreciate it and it s hows confidence and passion for your work.Make sure to vary the pitch of your voice avoid speaking in a monotone. And vary the pace of your words. Slow down your pace for key, essential points and increase the speed of your words slightly when moving to another topic and to convey excitement.Maintain eye contact with your customer. This shows that you are interested in your customers and you can also watch their expressions to get valuable feedback on their reactions to your presentation. Think of your customers as your friends. Dont be too stiff and formal. Use some tasteful humor to make your points.Realize the Benefits of Your PassionBacon goes on to say thatIf you show passion in your work every day and with every customer, youwillget more sales and youwillbe more persuasive in your work. This in turn will fuel your passion even more. Passion for your work will also help you get through the tough parts of your day. When you are passionate about your work, the day goes by much fa ster and you are happy about the contribution that you make to your customers and the community.Identify all of the essential tasks that you must do each day to get the job done. Focus throughout the day on the tasks that you feel most passionate about and understand that you must still complete the essential tasks that you do not enjoy in order to get to the tasks that you do enjoy. There is no one else in the world exactly like you, Bacon says. He believes that even if your product or service is widely available, who you are and the passion you bring to your work and to your customers is what makes you uniquely you.If you can hold onto the passion for your product or service and demonstrate that passion to your customers or clients, their response will reinforce your work passion.Brett Bacon has afree newsletter that is available at his website andis also the co-author of Wake Up...Live the Life You Love In Service. Banish End-of-Year Stress at the Office - The Muse

Banish End-of-Year Stress at the Office - The MuseBanish End-of-Year Stress at the OfficeThe holiday treats start flowing into the geschftszimmer (cookies=calories), decorations appear in the lunchroom (a dreidel hangs on a Christmas tree), and then the dreaded self-talk begins about what to buy for the secret office gift pool (a stress ball seems apropos). The festivities have begun, but the merrier trimmings wont likely override the underlying state of the workforce. A Gallup poll this year found that 70% of the workforce was either disengaged or miserable. An uncertain labor market, work overload, and nudging thoughts about career advancement are enough to have you thinking about jumping on the next sleigh away from the office.Generally, we all get a bit sensitive with more work-life conflict during the holidays. But stress at the office, like year-end deadlines, office politics, and expectations from the corner office, can burn you out and make your eggnog go sour. Here are six too ls to bring you comfort and joy this time of year, making your workplace holiday experience a little more manageable.1. Dont Take Anything PersonallyFor many people, the holidays can be tough. Old memories or wounds tend to surface, some miss loved ones, and December acts as a reminder of yet aleidher year gone by. Unless youre a mind reader, you wont know whats going on with your colleagues in any given moment, and its unrealistic to try to figure it out. Instead, its extra important to give people the benefit of the doubt this time of year- accepting that they may be more stressed or pained than usual, and trying your best not to jump into defensive mode if someone lashes out at you.Thats not to say you should be a doormat. But consider the source before taking things to heart.Related What to Do After You Snap at a Teammate (if You Want Everything to Go Back to Normal) 2. Determine What Can WaitWith year-end reviews and deadlines on the horizon, we often spend the end of the year stressing over finishing last-minute reports, wrapping up back-burner projects, and squeezing in just one more meeting before the holidays- knowing full well in the back of our minds that its not all going to get done. This year, try this With any item on your to-do list, ask yourself, Is it a high-level priority that will impact my good standing at work- or can it wait? For those second-tier projects, approach your manager with a few solutions, as well as more reasonable timelines in which you can get them done.3. Practice a Growth MindplatzsetWhether youre dealing with a difficult colleague or wondering how to approach a problem at work, positive psychology research smiles upon working through the lens of a growth mindset, which opens your mind toward reframing thoughts that make you feel stuck. For example, think of a colleague youve perceived as indifferent, difficult, or just set in his ways. Rather than concentrating on his faults or judging him, try focusing more on learning n ew ways to work with him.By using a more curious approach, youll persist in the face of setbacks, learn from feedback, embrace challenges, and realize your effort can help you achieve more successful results- all of which creates positive emotions that can help reduce your stress at the office.Related 3 Steps to Turn Any Setback Into a Success4. Use Breath as a Daily Stress-Busting RitualIncorporating regular deep breathing into your daily routine is the cheapest, easiest way possible to foster a sense of calm throughout your workday. Try setting your phone alarm twice a day for a breathing break (preferably, late morning and late afternoon). Take three deep breaths into the pit of your belly, evenly inhaling to a count of three, holding for a moment, and exhaling to a count of three. Do two rounds of that. Then on a third round, double the length of your exhalation, which triggers a physical relaxation response. Try it- and see how much better you feel about the task at hand afterw ard.5. Find Moments of SolitudeIts almost counterintuitive to imagine that the office can be a respite from the holiday bustle, but finding small ways to take a break throughout the day can really help your sanity this time of year. Take a walk, listen to some music for a few minutes- or if you can- just close your door for some quiet time. You could even try working in a conference room or telecommuting for a day or two.If its hard to take a break throughout the day, place a small trinket on your desk that reminds you to shift your mind to a calmer place, or display a family picture on your desk to help you remember the good people around you.Related Take Five 51 Things to Do When You Need a Break at Work6. Savor Positive Experiences at WorkThe end of the year is always a good time to reflect, so take time to look back on the better moments from the last year at work. Were there projects that you influenced in a profitable or creative way? Were there relationships that enhanced you r working experience?Even if you dont particularly like your job, writing a list of the good points associated with your position can enhance your skills of gratitude and positive thinking. In fact, research shows such behavior helps to activate the feel-good neurotransmitters of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine in your brain. This then triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to reduce stress.Dont let stress at the office get in the way of enjoying the holiday season. By proactively managing your work stress, youll finish the year- and start the new one- in an all-around happier place.DONT LET WORK STRESS BE Yur NORMIf it isnt just a holiday thing, maybe its time to move on.MEET OUR CAREER COACHES

What is a Jobs Report and What Does it Mean for You

What is a Jobs Report and What Does it Mean for You What is a Jobs Report and What Does it Mean for You If you’re an astute reader of the Simply Hired blog or a consumer of mainstream news media, you’ve probably heard the term “Job’s Report” bandied about.  If you ever thought the phrase was uttered with something close to holy reverence, it probably wasn’t your imagination or a bout of hallucination caused by last night’s bad sushi dinner.   In economic circles, the job report is a bell weather for, well, pretty much everything.  From industry growth to consumer spending, the jobs report can be reliably used to forecast performance on both a macro and micro level across all states and territories.  What, then, exactly is the jobs report and what causes it to have such a magical ability to predict the future? Sit back, dear reader, as we delve into the what’s, how’s and why’s of the mystical stats that collectively are the U.S. Jobs Report. What is the U.S. Jobs Report? To get to the basics, the U.S. Jobs report is a, well, report, that is prepared by the U.S. government.  To be exact, this handy snapshot of economic help is compiled by the fine people at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Towards the end of every month, BLS employees call up actual companies, big and small, and take a survey of hiring moves and shakeups.  The surveyors ask for stats such as the number of new hires, average salary, number of part-time versus full-time employees and more. Next, this useful data is combined with the number of new unemployment and other public assistance benefit claims submitted to the Federal government and analyzed.  BLS super nerdy types crunch the numbers and compare the data to the previous months’ statistics. A little shake here, a little stir there and poof, the U.S. Jobs Report is created.  This data is released never fail on the first Friday of the month after which it is scrutinized by bankers, companies, government institutions and internet armchair warriors for important takeaways.   Why the Impact on Markets You may be thinking to yourself “Okay, the whole preparation and data gathering makes sense, but how can a historical report impact future economic decisions?”  Excellent question! The health of the U.S. jobs market has an effect on economies both large and small. Major corporations may use the jobs report to decide to increase or decrease their purchase of consumer goods during the next month.   The jobs report is also used by the Federal Reserve to set interest rates to help ward off inflation and recession.  Slick-haired wall street banker types use the figures to buy, sell, and trade in specific stocks or markets, betting on the numbers being an indication that there’s a buck to be made in investment.  This cycle continues on a monthly basis until, well, forever, as a never-ending cycle of prediction, reaction, and gamesmanship. Jobs Report Impact on Job Seekers So the use by financial types and businesses may make sense, but why should individual job-seekers care about what brokers and bankers are up to?  Well, young (or not so young) grasshopper, let’s chat impact on your career. For starters, strong jobs report numbers fuel a booming economy which in turn further fuels the spiral of hiring.  A trend of strong jobs reports numbers means a higher of the raw number of jobs will probably be needed over the coming months. High job report numbers also mean that there are fewer job seekers on the market.  Supply and demand isn’t just a concept to be applied to the latest avocado shortage at your local market.  When there are more people employed, companies will often have to look longer, harder, and pay a greater premium for top quality talent.  A higher unemployment rate has the opposite effect, leading to a glut in the market and giving employers the ability to be pickier with candidates and stingier with compensation.  While it can take a series of months for would be job-hunters to see the trickle-down impact, the jobs report numbers do indeed have a noticeable impact on your individual employment prospects. Knowing is Half the Battle While there is plenty of additional details and minutia we could share, our word count (and your attention span) is happier if we stop with our high-level review.  So the next time you see a fancy Simply Hired blog post delving into the U.S. Jobs Report numbers, feel free to click through. You may gain useful info that could impact your next job search or the ability to negotiate a raise or other perks from your current employer.  At the very least you’ll have some fun water cooler knowledge to break up that daily drudgery. Now get back to work before your boss makes you the next “fired” statistic to be included on the monthly survey calls!

How to Find Your Zen Using Body Language in an Interview

How to Find Your Zen Using Body Language in an Interview How to Find Your Zen Using Body Language in an Interview This advice is intended to help you create trust, acceptance, and confidence while interacting with any group of people. I’ve discovered a few parallels between teaching yoga students and making presentations for interviewers. Here's how you can use body language to create a zen atmosphere in your next job interview. Here's how to breathe properly This sounds pretty simple. You do it all the time, right? But do you find that you speak too quickly when you’re nervous and must pause to breathe? If so, there’s a strong chance that your breath is landing in your chest. You’re not taking in the big, deep breaths to fill your lungs and provide oxygen to your brain, which is slightly important during an interview. Breathing before an interview The next time you find yourself in an anxiety-ridden interview, prepare for it by breathing deeply and slowly, before heading in. If you want to be formal about it, breathe in for a slow count of 4 seconds, exhale for a slow count of 6, pause for another count of 4, and repeat. The longer exhale of oxygen will cause your body to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for your resting state. Your body starts to relax. Remember to keep breathing during the interview This one is simple. Use punctuation marks to breathe. Typically, you pause momentarily after each comma, and longer after each period while reading sentences. Talk like you read and use those pauses as a chance to take a deep breath before finishing your thought. As a bonus, you’ll seem more relaxed and confident than if you’re stringing 11 thoughts together in one breath. Getting yourself grounded Keeping your feet flat on the ground stabilizes you. The solid connection with the ground stimulates your body to relax and stay still since you’re no longer prepared to move. It also helps you sit up taller because of the way it tilts the sacrum. Grounding before an interview Scoot to the end of the chair and firmly set your feet on the ground while waiting in the lobby. This will enable your body to relax and stay alert. If you lean back in the chair, you will become too relaxed. If you’re standing, make sure you’re pressing evenly through both feet. I like to sway to the left, the right, the front and back of my feet to find the center of my stance. This will help stack your joints going up the leg, as well, and ease tension in your body. Staying grounded in the interview Pull the chair back from the table and sit with your feet flat on the floor. Unless you’re using your hands to explain a point, place them on your knees or thighs, palm down. This at-ease position signals your brain that there isn’t any danger and you’re feeling settled. Feeling settling will keep you focused on the task at hand. The at-ease position also keeps you from fidgeting with your hands, too. Fidgeting sends signals to the interviewer that you’re feeling frazzled. Get personal with your pronouns This one is a language tip. Did you know by using language that directly associates something with the person you’re talking to, they are more likely to understand and trust you and more likely to take a positive action? For instance, if I’m teaching someone to do a headstand, and say, “Lift the right leg up.” a student will likely feel anxious about tipping over and not trust their own ability? Whereas, if I say, “Lift your right leg up.” they feel more trusting and likely will go for it because the teacher is speaking directly to them. ‘ In a similar way, using personal pronouns can help you create trust and credibility with your interviewer and yourself. Practice personal pronouns before the interview While practicing questions or reviewing what you’ll talk about, make sure you use personal pronouns to help you feel confident in your answers. Instead of saying, “It will be important to mention my skills in [this field]”, try phrasing that thought as “I want to make sure I mention my skills in [this field]. I find it important to the success of my future job.” As you use these personal pronouns, you’ll take greater ownership of your skill set and interviewers will see your passion when you talk about it. How to use pronouns during the interview Chances are you’ll be answering a lot of questions about yourself, so make the interviewer feel like a part of your world. Use lead-ins such as, “You might find it interesting that I [insert your experience]” when answering questions. You can also use this tactic when asking questions to gain a more honest and less rehearsed answer to the question, “Why do you like working here?” Instead, try asking, “Why do you like working at your company?” or “What are your favorite parts of your role?” Making the interviewer feel like you’re asking for their insights and experience and not just the company’s will yield a more insightful answer. Here's the truth about achieving zen in job interviews It is true that in order to be your best self and achieve zen in an interview, you just need to be yourself. These tips can help you send the message to interviewers that you are a calm, cool, collected and attractive job candidate. Best of luck with your next job interview!

Compulsory Mechanical Licenses for Music Recordings

Compulsory Mechanical Licenses for Music Recordings Compulsory Mechanical Licenses for Music Recordings There are several varieties of license to consider when you have a copyrighted work. Compulsory mechanical licenses are an important exception to copyright rules. Under compulsory license rules, you have to allow someone to use your recording whether you like it or not. Anybody can obtain a compulsory mechanical license without express permission from the copyright holder. This kind of license is important to understand  but doesnt come into play very often. The administration is extremely time-consuming, and the work required just to prove you qualify for the license is difficult enough. Compulsory Mechanical License Basics A compulsory mechanical license is a license that the owner of a copyright has to issue. In the U.S., mechanical royalties earned under a compulsory license are paid to the copyright owner on the license at the so-called statutory rate, which is the rate set by the Copyright Board for these licenses. The statutory rate is currently 9.1 cents or 1.75 cents per minute of composition, whichever is greater, per unit. A compulsory license provides that the owner of a patent or copyright-licenses the use of their rights against payment either set by law or determined through some form of adjudication or arbitration. In essence, under a compulsory license, an individual or company seeking to use anothers intellectual property can do so without seeking the rights holders consent and pays the rights holder a set fee for the license. When an Intellectual Property Law Exception Is Made for Compulsory Mechanical Licenses This is an exception to the general rule under intellectual property laws that the intellectual property owner enjoys exclusive rights that it may license - or decline to license - to others. Compulsory mechanical licenses can only be requested under very specific circumstances. First, a compulsory license must be granted to anyone who wants to release an audio recording of your work. Second, a compulsory license can be issued if it will be used for a payment that is a legal obligation. The Rules of a Compulsory Mechanical License If one of those initial rules apply, there are other circumstances that must be met before a compulsory mechanical is granted, which include the following criteria: The recording in question must be non-dramatic. Although non-dramatic is a vague term, it is usually assumed to mean a recording associated with a dramatic performance, like a song used in a musical or an opera. The song must have already been recorded and distributed by the copyright owner. Another way this is stated is that the copyright owner gets first use of their creation. Note that the copyright owner has to be the one who recorded it; if someone else steals their work and records it, that doesnt qualify as previously recorded. Also, recording it is not enough. The copyright owner has to have made it available for public consumption. Only audio recordings can be made. These audio recordings include physical phonorecords and digitally distributed copies of an audio recording. No major changes can be made to the work. You are not allowed to change the lyrics or make other substantial changes to the original song. If all of these requirements are met, a compulsory mechanical license can be issued. Once a compulsory mechanical is in place, there are certain rules that have to be followed that differ from a standard, non-compulsory license. Monthly Accounting and Royalties Under a compulsory mechanical, accounting to the copyright owner by the license holder is done once a month (a requirement that makes compulsory mechanicals extremely unattractive to many). With compulsory mechanicals, there is a limit on the reserves the license holder can withhold and these reserves must be sold and paid out on at certain intervals. Further, royalties are due on every copy made and distributed rather than made and sold, which means royalties are paid on promotional copies and other free stuff handed out by the  license holder. The monthly accounting requirement is what makes these licenses unattractive. That said, compulsory mechanical licenses are very important to understand because of the framework they lay out for standard mechanical licenses, particularly the statutory rate. The statutory rate becomes the de facto ceiling price for a mechanical license. No one will pay over the statutory rate, and in fact, many record labels pay less than the statutory rate to their artists.

How to Work With Someone You Hate - The Muse

How to Work With Someone You Hate - The Muse How to Work With Someone You Hate There she is again. That fake smile. That annoying laugh. Everyone else seems to think she’s the second coming of Sheryl Sandberg, but she grates on your nerves like a fork dragging down a dry chalkboard. You can’t put your finger on why, exactly, but your gut is telling you, “Don’t trust her.” If you could, you would just avoid this particular colleague completely. The problem is, you have to work with her every day. It’s bad enough to dislike someone that you have to see five (or more) days a week. It’s even worse when it feels like nobody else is particularly bothered by him or her. It’s just you. As a psychologist and life coach, I hear a lot of frustrated diatribes about “that one person” at the office who feels like a prickling thorn, wrecking your workplace zen. Here’s my take on how to deal with a co-worker who you (ugh!) just cannot stand. Remember That It’s Okay to Not Like Someone Gasp! Really? Yes. A lot of people feel intensely guilty for not liking or thinking negative thoughts about a certain person. But actually, it’s perfectly okay to dislike someone’s personality. It’s no different than not liking a particular shirt in a clothing store, a particular fragrance, or a particular item on a menu. You are human, and all human beings are wired with individual likes and dislikes. It’s okay for you to have certain preferences, just like your super annoying colleague has his or her own preferences, too. Remember That a Feeling and Acting on a Feeling are Two Very Different Things Privately not liking something or someone and thinking to yourself, “Nope, no thanks!” is not a problem. The problem arises if you act on your feelings in an outward, hurtful way. Like tossing red paint on the shirt that you absolutely can’t stand in the store, for example. Or treating a co-worker rudely and inappropriately. Part of having your emotional act together is being able to feel a certain way without needing to act on that feeling. Remember That Gossiping Only Hurts One Person’s Reputation: Yours It can feel so tempting to chitchat around the proverbial water cooler about how awful that certain co-worker is. Many people try to use snarky gossip as a way to bond with their co-workers, earning their laughter and what they think is their respect. But engaging in that kind of behavior only makes you seem like an insensitive bully. If you truly want to bond, ask people about their current obsessions (the healthy kind), their passions, the music they love, their secret dreams and projects- or stick with a simple get-to-know-you question, like, “What’s been the best part of your morning so far?” Build a reputation as the most positive, inspiring person at the office- not the snarkiest. Remember That When Someone Pushes Your Buttons, There’s a Reason for It If someone profoundly bugs you, in a can’t-get-over-it kind of way, the emotions you’re feeling are not coming out of nowhere. It’s likely that this person reminds you of someone else who hurt you in the past. Maybe the co-worker who drives you nuts constantly interrupts you when you’re speaking- just like your mom used to do (and still does!). Or maybe your colleague acts a certain way in one-on-one meetings with you, but then puts on a completely different face and demeanor for group meetings when the boss is watching. And this reminds you of your “perfect” older sister who always won everyone’s affection and praise, even though she was so mean to you when the two of you were alone together. If someone at work irritates you, and the feeling of frustration is very intense and lasts more than 15 seconds, that’s a good sign that something from your past is being triggered. That something is often (though not always) connected to a situation from childhood. Do some soul searching or free writing to see if you can connect the dots, understand yourself a bit better, and ultimately, forgive whoever hurt you in the past, so you don’t have to carry around the burden of resentment any longer. Remember That You Can Express Yourself Honestly- Without Being Unprofessional If your co-worker is doing something specific that upsets you, you can- and should- have a civil conversation about it. Ideally, it should happen sooner rather than later, before it blows up into something irreconcilable. Be specific, reasonable, and matter-of-fact with your request. If your co-worker is continually breaking promises or missing deadlines, for example, say, “Hey, I know you’re probably swamped with emails. I am, too. But when you say that you’ll email me your portion of the project by 4 PM, and you don’t follow through, it makes it tough for me to work efficiently and move projects forward on schedule. In the future, if you’re sensing that you won’t be able to send something on time, I’d appreciate a quick head’s up. Thanks.” It truly is possible to talk about an issue without resorting to an accusatory tone, rudeness, or other unprofessional behavior. Model the kind of respectful communication and workplace conduct that you’d like to see. Rather than moaning, snarking, or gossiping, be a beacon of excellence- and that will inspire everyone around you to rise up, too. Remember That Everyone Just Wants to Be Loved D.H. Lawrence once wrote, “In every living thing there is the desire for love.” That’s the truth. Everyone- you, your boss, your favorite co-worker, and your least favorite co-worker- are all human beings who want to love and be loved, in one way or another. We all try to get love in different ways (some of us, in not so healthy ways!). Your co-worker’s irritating need to constantly take credit for everything and be the center of attention might be born from a place of deep personal insecurity. In other words, her love tank might be running low and garnering external praise and attention is the only way she knows how to fill it. In every situation, try to remain compassionate and remember that, ultimately, we’re all just trying to get our emotional needs met in the best way we know how. Go forth. Do the best work that you can. It’s okay to not like someone- and it’s okay if someone doesn’t like you. It doesn’t make either of you bad or wrong. Just different people with different preferences and different skills and attributes to offer the world. Nothing more- and certainly nothing less. 5 signs youre doing the job you were born to do

5 signs you're doing the job you were born to do 5 signs you're doing the job you were born to do Though there is an endless supply of dating advice out there, most of the time when you ask someone how they knew their partner was the right match for them - the answer is rather simple. “It just worked.” Or “It felt right.” For those hopeful singles who can’t seem to find love, it’s a frustrating nugget of wisdom that feels directionless. Though you may not always have control over matters of the heart - or fate, if you believe in such a thing - professionals do have a say-so in their careers. And when the stars align - after much work, determination and grit - something quite magical happens. You wake up refreshed, ready to tackle whatever the day throws your way. You’re excited about your responsibilities, deliverables, and impact on your team, clients and company. More than anything, well, it works and it feels right. But how can you be certain? Here, experts share the clear signs that (lucky you) you’re doing the job you were born to do.Follow Ladders on Fli pboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Your job plays to your strengthsBy now you should know what you’re stellar at - and the areas where you fall short. You also understand your limitations - and celebrate your triumphs. This level of self-awareness comes with time and experience, but when you are appointed to a position or given a job opportunity that directly aligns with your natural talents, career expert for TopResume, Amanda Augustine says you’re tracking along, just fine.“The right job should play to your strengths, while still providing room for you to grow. If you possess certain abilities that you’ve worked hard to hone and you enjoy using, then search for opportunities that will allow you to leverage them,” she shares. You have synergy between professional and personalSure, it may sound a bit metaphorical than practical, but career expert Joy Altimare says when a person is livi ng their best career path, they’ll find harmonious energy that connects every effort and activity to success. This makes them feel like they’re doing something they’re great at (because they are), they’re appreciated (and it shows) and they are helping their community (with proof).“When this happens you will feel like you’re living your calling, and work no longer ‘feels like work,’” she continues. “To really live this way, you will find yourself being constantly present, critical and vigilant about living your truth - in and out of the office.”You feel as though you’re still learning and growingEven if your job checks off a few of those qualities you would want in employment - like a paycheck and flexible hours - if it doesn’t allow an opportunity for growth, you’re selling yourself short. As Augustine puts it, in the best kind of job you will find opportunities to not only sharpen but expand your skills.“This keeps you engaged and happy at work and ensures you don’t become complacent at work,” she continues. “The fastest way to lose your relevancy in the workforce is to stop learning. Look for the moments that will challenge you and encourage you to take some calculated risks.”Your job may be stressful or tough, but you still enjoy the workIn the world’s most amazing career of all time - it isn’t only smooth sails, endless fulfilling experiences, and rewarding compensation. In fact, stress will come with any and every gig, no matter the industry or your leadership level. Augustine reminds professionals there will be long nights, tight deadlines, difficult customers and tough negotiations. But if you’re in the right job, these bumps in the are just that: bumps.“They don’t blindside you or make you question why you’re pursuing this career in the first place. If you are able to keep perspective, even when the going gets tough, it means you’ve found the right career path,” she shares. You’re excited to t hink about workIt’s Sunday - and you know what that means: scaries. Or maybe not, if you’re doing the job made for you. Though there will be vacations you wish you could extend, weekends where another day would be great and times when you feel exhausted, Altimare says when someone is so passionate about their work, they look forward to it, it’s a sign of happiness. You may even find that you like thinking about your work and it doesn’t exhaust you to do so.“You see inspiration throughout the day and often think of ways in which to drive results outside of the office,” she adds. Thoughts on Truth, Truthiness, and Lying on a Resume

Thoughts on Truth, Truthiness, and Lying on a Resume Truth, Truthiness, and Lying on a Resume Thoughts on Truth, Truthiness, and Lying on a Resume A few years ago, Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, introduced us to the concept of truthiness. Basically, a statement has truthiness if you really wish it were (or feel it should be) true. Politicians might embrace the concept of truthiness, but hiring managers call it lying if you do it on your resume. Even though we all know it's stupid to lie on your resume, a recent survey by CareerBuilder.com found that 49% of hiring managers have caught job seekers doing just that. I think the key here is to understand the line between presenting your qualifications in their very best light, and blatantly falsifying them. A good example is the dorky Dwight Schrute on The Office. He was hired as the Assistant to the Regional Manager, but he likes to leave out the two little words in the middle, thus promoting himself to the title he feels he deserves: Assistant Regional Manager. That seems to be a common practice among resume embellishers in the real world, too. What Do People Lie About? According to the survey, the misrepresentations hiring managers most often see on resumes involve one of the following areas: Responsibilities (38%); Skill set (18%); Dates of employment (12%); Academic degree (10%); Companies worked for (7%); or Job title (5%). Below are some examples of workplace scenarios from each of these six areas in which a job seeker might be tempted to lie. In each case, there's a lie, there's the truth (the whole truth and nothing but the truth), and there's also an acceptable middle ground that presents the truth in a way that just sounds better. 1. Responsibilities SCENARIO: You're the assistant sales manager, but you have temporarily assumed full managerial duties while the sales manager is out on medical leave. Your title hasn't officially changed, but you currently have higher-level responsibilities. Lie: Sales Manager, July 2007 to Present Assistant Sales Manager, January 2005 to July 2007 Truth: Assistant Sales Manager, January 2005 to Present Still True but Sounds Better: Acting Sales Manager, July 2007 to Present (covering Sales Manager's leave) Assistant Sales Manager, January 2005 to July 2007 2. Skill Set SCENARIO: You've used Excel to create some simple spreadsheets and graphs, and you did an online tutorial called Excel for Beginners. You know what Excel can do, and you're very interested in learning more, but you're by no means a power user (yet). Lie: Proficient in Excel (Alternative:simply listing all your skills under a single heading such as Software Proficiency, which implies expertise in all) Truth: Beginner-Level Excel Skills, or Familiarity with Excel Still True but Sounds Better: Developing Knowledge of Excel, or Emerging Skills in Excel 3. Dates of Employment You took a seasonal position selling products from a kiosk in the Cityville Mall during the holidays from October 15, 2007, through January 3, 2008, a total of less than three months. Lie: 2007 2008 (This is a common tactic people use to try and hide gaps in their employment. It's a red flag for hiring managers, since they can't tell if the job lasted two weeks or almost two years.) Truth: October 15, 2007January 3, 2008 Still True but Sounds Better: October 2007 to January 2008, or Holiday Season 2007 4. Academic Degree SCENARIO: You're a registered nurse with an associate's degree. You've been attending university courses at night and are just a few credits shy of your bachelor's in nursing. If all goes as planned, you will have your new degree in less than six months. Lie: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, Midwest University, 2008 Truth: Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree, Midwest College, 2001 Working on BSN at Midwest University Still True but Sounds Better: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, Midwest University, expected date of completion: December 2008 Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree, Midwest College, 2001 5. Companies Worked For SCENARIO: You have 5 years' experience as an IT Manager at Notbad Corp. For the past two years, you've been doing the same kind of work nearly full-time as an independent contractor for BigName Inc., which is the cream of the crop in IT (the company everyone in your field aspires to work for), plus some side jobs for a startup company. Lie: April 2006 to Present, BigName Inc., IT Manager January 2001 to April 2006, Notbad Corp., Boston, MA, IT Manager Truth: Self-Employed IT Consultant, April 2006 to Present Clients include BigName Inc. and Startup, LLC IT Manager, January 2001 to April 2006 Notbad Corp., Boston, MA Still True but Sounds Better: IT Consultant, April 2006 to Present BigName, Inc., (32-40 hours/wk), Startup, LLC, (10-15 hours/wk) IT Manager, January 2001 to April 2006 Notbad Corp., Boston, MA 6. Job Title SCENARIO: Your official title is Secretary. You've been the CEO's right hand for six years, managing every aspect of his daily schedule, correspondence, and all administrative tasks, freeing him up to focus on the strategic vision that has made the company such a thriving business. Lie: Director of Executive Operations (Although you may have indeed directed the CEO's activities, the title Director implies a different set of skills and responsibilities.) Truth: Secretary (While accurate, this is a largely outdated title, and does not reflect the true scope of what you've been doing.) Still True but Sounds Better: Executive Assistant to the CEO (An EA is understood to be an administrative assistant to a high-level executive. This more descriptive title gives hiring managers a clearer understanding of your experience.) On the continuum from unseasoned truth to unmitigated lying, we definitely need to stay safely on the side of truth (sorry, truthiness is not enough). However, we don't need to be so absolute and official that we undersell our true value to an employer. Tell the truth on your resume, but be sure to spotlight the most impressive parts of the truth, while leaving the lesser details in the shadows.

1 in 3 Millennials using retirement money to finance homes

1 in 3 Millennials using retirement money to finance homes 1 in 3 Millennials using retirement money to finance homes When you’re a cash-strapped aspiring homeowner, you may start digging through all your emergency funds to get the home of your dreams. In fact, a new  Bank of the West’s survey  of over 600 Americans ages 21-34 found that nearly 1 in 3 Millennial homeowners have used their retirement funds as down payments for their home. The survey found that Millennials are willing to sacrifice their far-off future for their homeowner dream of the present. Fifty-six percent of Millennials said that owning a home was a bigger priority than paying off debt or retiring comfortably.  Is borrowing from your retirement a smart move? Experts have mixed feelings about this decision.Pros and cons of using retirement savings for buying a homeThe pros of using retirement money is dependent on if your home is a good investment or not. How long are you planning to stay in your home? Is this house in an up-and-coming neighborhood? What are rental prices like in your local area? These are questions that Abby H ayes, a personal finance blogger who has written for The Dough Roller, said that you should ask yourself before you withdraw retirement money. But the big downside is that you are risking your future financial security. That’s why Bank of the West finds this trend “alarming.” Once you take money out of your retirement account, it can be too hard for you to catch up on payments later on. “Millennials are so eager to become homeowners that some may be inadvertently cutting off their nose to spite their face,” Ryan Bailey, Head of the Retail Banking Group at Bank of the West, said. “To avoid buyer’s remorse, Millennials should cover their bases and kick the proverbial tires- reflecting on their physical and financial wishes for a home before they sign on the dotted line.”Weigh the decision of each investment carefully before you ink the deal. Take it from homeowners who regretted their decision. Forty-one percent of Millennials surveyed said their home stretched themselv es too thin financially. And 44% of Millennials said they discovered  damage to the house or realized too late that the space did not work for their family.

Click on the following link for more resume-writing tips to help you avoid the top resume mistakes. Q1: Should I take a recruiter's advice on my resume? Is it advisable to send a recruiter a copy of your resume and work with them to revise it for different positions? Vanisha The job of any recruiter is to fill a job vacancy, so if he or she offers you resume advice, it's a good idea to take it. This is especially true for contingency recruiters, whose pay is contingent upon their candidate being hired. If a contingency recruiter thinks you might be right for the job, they will likely work harder to make sure you get it, which could include offering ways to tweak your resume in the right direction. When it comes down to it, a recruiter's goals are the same as yours landing the job. Any advice given is in both of your best interests. Q2: Will adding a P.S. at the end of my cover letter make it more effective? I've heard that a P.S. at the end of a cover letter is more visible than the rest of the letter. What are your thoughts on including one? Have there been studies about this? Doug Adding a P.S. to your cover letter is a risky move. Before you even consider making that move, think about the culture of the company you are applying to. Many may see it as informal and careless, but some may be fine with it. Don't add one unless you know for sure, though you don't want something working against you if you can avoid it. Generally speaking, we don't advise it. Anything that you might want to include in your cover letter as a P.S. should already be in the letter itself. If you do decide to add one, know that what you are saying with it has to be extremely important. Your cover letter will likely not be well-received otherwise. You've made the risky move make sure it's worth it. Q3: How can I craft a resume that includes all of my vast work experience but isn't too long? I have a lot of experience in a variety of positions. How do I write a resume that shows all of this without writing a novel? Helena Having an expansive work history is great! It's likely that not all of it is relevant to your current job search, though. When crafting your resume, start by writing out all of your experience. Then, pick and choose what's applicable to the types of roles you're interested in. By doing this, you'll have a resume that is not only the appropriate length but also optimized for your job search. Remember, too, that not all work history requires excruciating detail. What you did 20 years ago is not as important as what you've done in the past 10. The further back you go in your professional timeline, the less detail you need to include. Limit your work history to titles, company names, and dates, or even add a career note stating Previous Experience Includes and list the positions you held. You want to make it clear that you were still working during this time this isn't an employment gap but you do not need to be specific about experience that is irrelevant or far in the past. Q4: How do I address gaps in my employment on my resume? If I am returning to work after sustaining an injury, how do I address the employment gap? Helena You don't need to address this on a resume, especially if there is a solid work history from before the gap. Let your experience speak for itself. If the employment gap is addressed in an interview, you can explain your hiatus without going into too much detail. Keep the focus on the fact that you're back and ready to roll in the workforce. Related:How to Handle Gaps in Your Employment History Q5: How different should my resume and LinkedIn profile be? Should my LinkedIn profile mirror my resume? Vanisha If you are currently searching for a job, it's not a bad strategy for your resume and LinkedIn profile to mirror each other. After all, LinkedIn is a significant part of your job application materials it is sometimes even used in lieu of a resume when you come across listings that give you the option to Apply With LinkedIn. No matter what you use it for, however, your LinkedIn profile should always tell the same story as your resume. Things like job goals, dates of employment, job titles, and the names of your employers all need to be consistent. Otherwise, LinkedIn is a great opportunity to add a bit more color and personality. Take advantage of this by sharing articles, and adding links and referrals. Your summary can even be less formal. Doing so will help you build your personal brand online. Q6: Should I include hobbies on my resume? What do you think of including hobbies on a resume? Peter Just like adding a P.S. to a cover letter, you should first consider your audience. This includes both the company overall and the individual people reading your resumebecause you don't want to include something that may negatively sway opinions of you. If you do choose to add hobbies to your resume, avoid touchy subjects like religion and politics unless they are totally relevant if you are applying for a religious organization, for example. If your hobbies can demonstrate a qualification for the job, you might more seriously consider adding them to your resume, especially if you are making a career change and they can speak to some of your experience in the new field. Otherwise, leave them off to be safe. If you don't need them, there's no reason to have them. Q7: If the focus of resumes should be on accomplishments, can I still include my position's duties? I know you should include accomplishments on a resume, but to fill out the rest, should you also include duties? Doug Of course. It's pretty unrealistic that you could fill an entire resume only with things you have achieved. When it comes to describing your position's duties, it's about how you phrase it. Instead of responsible for XYZ, think created and maintained XYZ. Characterize your job by detailing what you've done, not what your job description says. This is where action verbs come into play. Not only will they help you avoid redundant wording, but they will also strengthen your resume by tying your duties to your results. Avoid making the top resume mistakes.
